Dai Macedo Wins 2013 Miss Bum Bum Competition, Despite Controversy

A 25-year-old model with a 42-inch bottom has been crowned Brazil's new Miss Bum Bum.
Dai Macedo, who represented the central state of Goias in the nationwide search for the woman with the most bodacious butt in all of Brazil, was chosen from among 15 finalists by the contest's grand jury in Sao Paolo this week.
"It's a lot of work, a lot of devotion," Macedo told Agence France-Presse by way of an interpreter. "I denied myself a lot of things. No nightclubs. No sweets. I went to the gym Saturdays and Sundays."
The sacrifice is well worth it. Miss Bum Bum winners become instant celebrities in Brazil, and receive a fortune in endorsements.
But the glamor comes with its share of drama. Earlier this year, a columnist for Brazilian newspaper O Dia accused Miss Bum Bum contestants Mari Sousa and Eliana Amaral of bribing judges in attempts to win.

In a note published in October, well in advance of the winners being announced, the newspaper reported that Sousa had secured top honors by paying thousands of dollars to judges. It also claimed Amaral paid $32,000 to judges and would come in second.
Those ethically suspect predictions did not pan out (although Amaral was awarded third place), but even the future bum-bum queen became embroiled in the scandal at the time. Angered by the accusations, Macedo joined other contestants in lashing out against corruption in Miss Bum Bum via social media, according to News.co.au.
Macedo distanced herself from the outburst after winning the competition.
"I'm all emotional. I didn't expect to win,'' Macedo said, according to News.co.au. "All hell broke loose on social media sites but now I can say the contest was real.''

Idris Elba Will Try To Stop Terrorists In Bastille Day

You’ve seen lovers come together on Valentine’s Day, Bill Murray’s life loop around itself inGroundhog Day, and sorority girls get slashed in Black Christmas. And now comes the day of remembrance movie you’ve all been waiting for: Bastille Day. Okay, so it’s more of a terrorist thriller than it is a holiday extravaganza, but we’re still pretty excited, because Idris Elba will be sitting at the head of the table having signed on to lead the film, which comes to us from Vendome Pictures and Anonymous Content.

In Bastille Day, a young American boy is the prime suspect for an attack that took place on the Paris metro, and it is the duty of a U.S. operative (presumably Elba) to interrogate the kid before eventually making him "disappear," as to avoid shaming the U.S. government. But while the boy is in custody, several more attacks occur, proving his innocence. The operative’s task is made even more troublesome when he realizes the boy may be their only link to the person actually causing the attacks. It sounds like one of the more interesting arcs on 24, and if we can’t get Jack Bauer for the job, any Elba character is more than welcome to save the day.

Luckily, Bastille Day sounds like a smart thriller, rather than something Hollywood farted out after a weekend drunkfest. Variety reports the screenplay was written by Andrew Baldwin, whose as-yet-unproduced scripts include the Logan’s Run remake, and Takashi Miike’s WWII yakuza film The Outsider, with Tom Hardy set to star.

The Golden Globe-winning Elba is as proficient as any when it comes to balancing big budget spectacles with meatier character work. In this year alone, Elba starred in the bombastic Pacific Rim and the recently released Thor: The Dark World, as well as the third season of the excellent BBC detective series Luther and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which will get a limited release at the end of this month. The latter film has Oscar buzz long-walking all over it, so who knows where his career will take him after that.

Even his upcoming film slate is exemplary of his work ethic. He’s got Pierre Morel’s high-profile action drama The Gunman currently filming with Sean Penn and Javier Bardem, and he’s rumored to star in Jurassic World. In contrast, he’s starring in Debbie Tucker Green’s struggling family drama Second Coming and Sam Miller’s stranger danger thriller No Good Deed. The only thing Elba really hasn’t proven himself in is a big goofy slapstick comedy. And we’re perfectly fine with that.

Check out the trailer for Luther
’s third season, and get to watching it if you haven’t yet. And remember, there are only 245 more days of shopping until next year’s Bastille Day.

Star Wars: Episode VII Now Accepting Video Auditions

Surely there are thousands if not millions of young actors out there who dream of being in the next Star Wars film, but wind up being limited by the fact that they don't live in any of the locations where the production is doing its casting. Now that obstacle has been completely eliminated. According to Variety, J.J. Abrams and the folks behind Star Wars: Episode VII are now giving people the chance to send in video auditions to try out for the mysterious parts of "Rachel" and "Thomas" in the sci-fi epic.

We first heard about these two roles last week when a casting call sheet found its way online and was determined to be for the next chapter in the Star Wars
saga. For those that missed the descriptions the first time around, you can read them below:

Seeking young woman to play 17-18 year old. Must be beautiful, smart and athletic. Open to all ethnicities (including bi and multi-racial) Must be over 16.

Rachel - Was quite young when she lost her parents. With no other family, she was forced to make her way in a tough, dangerous town. Now 17, she has become street smart and strong. She is able to take care of herself using humor and guts to get by.

Always a survivor, never a victim, she remains hopeful that she can move away from this harsh existence to a better life. She is always thinking of what she can do to move ahead

Seeking young man to play 19-23 years old. Must be handsome, smart and athletic. Must be over 18.

Thomas - Has grown up without a father's influence. Without the model of being a man, he doesn't have the strongest sense of himself. Despite this he is smart, capable and shows courage when it is needed. He can appreciate the absurdities in life and understands you can't take life to seriously.
Those wanting to submit their video can go to the casting website at www.OpenCastingCall2013.com, and Variety notes that in addition to auditions in the UK there will be events held in Chicago, Illinois; Nashville, Tennessee; Austin, Texas; and Troy, Michigan.

Hearing stories like this it's hard not to wonder if Abrams and Disney would possibly consider casting newcomers to play the leads in the next Star Wars. Both Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were nobodies when George Lucas cast them as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, and Harrison Ford really only had his part in American Graffiti before he became Han Solo. Since the casting rumors began all we've heard are stories about big names, including Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Zac Efron, Ryan Gosling, Saoirse Ronan, David Oyelowo and Michael B. Jordan, but perhaps the studio and the director will wind up throwing us a curve ball and get someone brand new to the industry. Star Wars is one of the few franchises that has the potential to succeed based on its brand alone, so it's not an impossibility.

Just last week we heard some important news for Episode VII, as after months and months of waiting the film finally got a release date. Unlike all of the previous films in the series, the nextStar Wars movie won't be a summer blockbuster and instead will be heading into theaters just in time for Christmas on December 18, 2015. Presumably positioning the film for the end of the year was done to give Abrams and his team more time to get all of the proper pieces in place and make sure that they head into production with the strongest script possible. Working with a script originally drafted by Oscar winner Michael Arndt before Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over screenwriting duties, the film will have start cameras rolling next spring at England's legendary Pinewood Studios.
